Ninth Grader Hannah Huggett Wins Human Relations Commission Social Justice Award

Please congratulate Hannah Huggett, Grade 9 for winning the Social Justice Award.  Each year, the Human Relations Commission recognizes individuals who exemplify the virtues of social justice by promoting equal opportunity and equal access for residents of Holland.  Hannah started her community service as a member of the Black River “Green Team.” Working with the Black River School board and Republic Services, she was instrumental in organizing a new trash and composting program at school. Hannah also took the initiative to organize the recycling efforts at the Tulip Time run last spring, which diverted 434 pounds of recyclable materials from the local landfill. She organized the 2019 Holland Climate Rally and addressed gun violence at the 2018 March for our Lives Rally. She also participated as a panel member for the Interfaith Gun Violence Reduction Symposium in Saugatuck. If you see Hannah on campus please say congratulations for this incredible achievement. We are very proud of her efforts.

Black River Families...Step Right Up! Carnival is Coming!

The BR Big Top Carnival is Friday, March 27 from 6-8pm in the BR Lyceum and Gyms.

It takes a lot of Black River families to make the annual Carnival a success!

Here are some ways you can help:

1. Sponsor a Game or be a Carnival Underwriter! Here is the form.

2. Donate small game prizes. Dollar Tree, Target, Meijer, or Wal-Mart party favors are perfect.  We also need gently used books for all ages, from preschool to MS. Donations can be dropped off at either Office. Please label the bag with your name so we can say thank you!

3. Volunteer!  We need cupcake bakers, parents and students to run games, and help with set-up and clean-up.  Click here to sign up to volunteer or make cupcakes (see both sides)!

4. Come have fun at the Carnival!  Tickets will be on sale in both offices on 3/6.  The pre-order will go home in EL backpacks the week of March 9th.  There will be extra pre-order forms in both offices. Get your tickets early to avoid the line at the door!

Email Beth Powers at blackriverparentorg@brpsk12.org if you have any questions.

Thank you for helping to make the night a big success!

Below are some impressive statistics that Ken Freestone, Residential Energy Advisor of the City of Holland, gave us about how beneficial Black River’s composting has been:

We’ve learned that over the past approximately 4 months, we have diverted 113.4 yards of material from the landfill. Secondly, of the 8 organizations that participated in the composting pilot program (entirely churches and nonprofits, we were the only school) we by far produced the most compost. By all the groups together, 5.82 tons of CO2 were reduced from the atmosphere and due to the size our contribution a large percentage of that number was due to our compost. WOW!
