Lower Elementary Walker Line Procedure Change

After-school dismissal is a very busy time of day and we need your help during Walker Line.

In order to ensure the safety of our students during 'Walker Line' dismissal, parents AND older siblings of 1-3rd students must wait in line to pick up children/siblings after school.  If you have a child in Kindergarten, ALL of the siblings should wait in the Kindergarten line. This will help us dismiss every student directly to his or her parent/or older sibling.

Starting Monday (09-16), you will notice a sign that will help designate where the line is to form. Students ARE NOT allowed to leave with a parent or guardian at the East (back entrance) located by the Carline.  If students are walking out of the East entrance and not going to Carline, they will be redirected to the Walker Line.

Finally, please let your classroom teacher/s know if you need to make arrangements for a different person to pick up.

Following these procedures will help us to make sure that every student is safe and accounted for during this very busy time of the day.

2019 M-Step & MME Parent Score Report Release M-Step Logo

M-STEP Results: What Black River Families Can Expect

This past spring, BRPS students took one of Michigan’s summative statewide tests. Students in grades 3-7 took the M-STEP (Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress). Students in grade 8 and 9 took the PSAT 8/9 (for English language arts and mathematics) and the M-STEP (for science and social studies). Students in grade 10 took the PSAT 10.  Students in grade 11 took the MME (Michigan Merit Exam). Final results from the M-STEP, PSAT 8/9/10, and MME will be sent home with students on Monday, September 16 (or earlier for some grade levels).

The purpose of these state summative assessments is to see how close our students are to reaching Michigan’s high standards in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. For older students, the PSAT, SAT, and WorkKeys components also measure students’ readiness for success in college and careers.

Families are encouraged to review Parent Reports and learn where your child might need additional support.

The Michigan Department of Education has developed several useful documents that are available for download on the M-STEP web page (www.michigan.gov/mstep) and MME web page (www.michigan.gov/mme):

A Note from Mr. Shannon Brunink, Head of School

Hello BR families,

We wanted to take a moment to officially introduce Officer Nicole Hamberg from the Holland Police Department. Nicole is a Black River parent and also works with the school however she can. While she is not employed by Black River, we are so happy to know that Officer Hamberg has more flexibility in her schedule to spend more time with us here. Because of this, she is making a point to be on campus as much as she can when kids are dropped off and picked up, both to offer any assistance she can but more to show our kids how positive police can be in our everyday life.

Besides drop off and pick up times, Officer Hamberg will likely spend time with our students reading to elementary classes and also offering her expertise during our CAP classes to our older kids.

We have known Nicole for a long time and we are excited that she can spend even more time here at Black River!
