2021 Senior Graduation

We have exciting news! With the help of the Holland Department of Public Safety, we are shutting down Columbia Avenue so that we can celebrate our Senior Class of 2021 in style.  The official event will start at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25th. There is an alternate rain date of Wednesday, May 26th, same time, same place.

Each graduating Senior may invite 8 guests. In order to social distance, seating will be set up in a pod of 8 chairs per graduate on a first come, first served basis. If there are reasons the 8 guests would prefer to be separated they are welcome to move chairs to the open areas at the back and side of the parking lot. Details regarding parking, rehearsal, and more will be available soon. We can't wait to celebrate with you!

Contact Tracing Update

Dear Black River Community,

As we learned on Friday, the Ottawa County Health Department, along with several other nearby counties, is no longer requiring quarantine for students considered to be close contacts to COVID-19 cases at school.

An Ottawa County study found that of the quarantined students this year who were considered close contacts, only about 1.4% became positive cases because of exposure in school.  At Black River, this figure is actually significantly less than the countywide number of 1.4%.

Because of this, Black River will no longer require students to quarantine because of close contacts relating to school or school activities.  We will continue all of our in-school mitigation strategies as well as continue to notify families of any exposures to COVID-19 at school.  This notification will come to parents and guardians through the email addresses listed in their child's contact information on Infinite Campus.

While schools are able to do this with the support of our health department, it is very important for all to understand that households with positive cases must still quarantine as before.  Also, we rely on families to screen children for symptoms of COVID-19 before coming to school to reduce the risk of positive cases coming to our school.

It takes all of us to make a safe school.  Thank you for your efforts to help stop the spread!

US News & World Report Ranks BRPS #12 in the State

Black River has once again been recognized as a top high school in Michigan by US News & World Report, a well respected review. Based on state-required test performance, graduation rates, and a special emphasis on how well our school prepares students for college, Black River ranked #12 in the state of Michigan. This ranking is out of 1149 Michigan high schools and puts us in the top 1.04% of high schools in our state! We were also ranked in the top 500 schools nationwide, putting Black River in the top 2.1% of high schools in the US.

In this study, Black River also earned the #1 ranking in the state among charter high schools. We are so proud of all of our teachers and students. “It takes the whole K-12 to make the high school rank this highly,” said Head of School, Shannon Brunink. Click here for the full article.

Community Service Update

While we want to encourage students to continue to do positive things for our community, the traditional community service hourly requirement will not hold a student back from graduating this Spring or from moving up in grade levels for next year. This applies to our current 3rd, 5th, 8th and 12th graders.

Community service hours that students' have already completed for the 2020-2021 school year, as well as new hours acquired, can be submitted electronically by a parent and/or guardian through the Black River website > Quick Links > Forms > the Community Service Electronic Submission Form - Use During COVID-19 Remote Learning. We look forward to when more traditional opportunities are available again!  Please enjoy a safe and restful Spring Break.

Graduation Date Announced

Black River is excited to announce that the Class of 2021 Graduation Ceremony has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 25th.

The plan is to have an in-person graduation event on site at Black River. The details are being worked out and will be available as soon as possible. There is a very good chance this will be an outdoor event, so we are looking to have an alternate rain date of May 26th.

We will follow all Health Department guidelines. There is a chance that there may need to be limited family attendance, with families or households able to sit together, but in groups. Groups, then, will still need to socially distance. For example, one family seated close together, and then some space, and then another family seated close to each other, etc.

More details will be announced as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We are proud of all our students and look forward to celebrating the Class of 2021.

Masks at BRPS Athletic Events

Black River is committed to adhering to the governor's Executive Order requiring our student athletes to wear masks for all sports activities listed in the Order.  Our students know that this is for safety and we all must do our part to end this pandemic.

Spectators at all BR athletic events are also required to properly wear a mask in order to be admitted to our events.  These masks must  be worn during the entire event.  Please know that spectators not properly wearing masks will cause a stoppage in our students' play and those refusing to wear their masks will be required to leave. Click here for the MHSAA guideline.

Thank you for understanding how important this is to all of us - especially our student athletes.
