An Important Note From Our Head Rat

Did you know that the Black River Parent Organization spends $20,000 annually to support field trips, student celebrations, teacher appreciation gifts, and more for our Black River community?  Black River is truly fortunate to have the support of these dedicated parents!

These funds are raised by a school-wide fundraising campaign which culminates in our annual Fun Walk which is coming on October 5th!  Over the course of this week, our Parent Organization has distributed envelopes to students for collecting donations for this event.  Please take some time to look for it and consider donating to this great organization.  After the necessary funds are raised to support the items mentioned above for this school year, the excess funds will go toward the outdoor hard surface project.  A project for which our Parent Organization is dedicated to making a reality as soon as possible and has already saved over $40,000.  We're excited that project will benefit all of our students here at Black River.

For more information, to donate with a credit card, or to see the winning artwork that will be featured on this year's t-shirts, please visit the Fun Walk Friday website.

November School Millage

This fall, for the first time, Black River will be part of the local school millage.

You will be hearing soon about a regional school millage on the November 2018 ballot.  The Ottawa Area Intermediate School District initiated an enhancement millage proposal on behalf of all its constituent school districts, including Black River.  Both Muskegon and Kent ISD's have successfully passed regional enhancement millages for their schools.  As a resident of Ottawa County, you will have the opportunity in November to vote on this proposal.  Please read through this FAQ document for more information!

Middle School Odyssey of the Mind Program is Starting Soon!

Middle school students, Black River is looking to expand their Odyssey of the Mind program, and we need you to represent the first ever BR middle school team! Odyssey of the Mind is a problem solving, think outside the box, student lead, competitive program.  For more information email Ashley Huizenga at odysseyatbr@gmail.com and join us at our information night in the Elementary Music Room on Thursday, September 27 from 6-7.

Odyssey of the Mind Volunteers Needed!

Attention all high school Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors: The elementary students will be participating in a program called Odyssey of the Mind, and they need your help to be successful! Odyssey of the Mind is a program that "teaches students how to think in different ways by providing open-ended problems that appeal to a wide range of interests.  Students learn how to identify challenges and to think creatively to solve those problems."  For each team of seven students, one coach and one co-coach is needed.  This year we are turning to the Black River High School students to fulfill the role of co-coach.  Students who volunteer to participate as a co-coach have the opportunity to earn community service hours, be a mentor and role model to younger students, act as a leader in an amazing program, and learn new skills.  Teams will meet once a week beginning in November and leading up to the Regional Tournament on February 2, 2018.  The frequency of team meetings is likely to increase leading up to the tournament.  For more information please email OotM Coodinator, Ashley Huizenga, at odysseyatbr@gmail.com.  There will also be an information night hosted in the Elementary Music Room on Thursday, September 27 from 6-7.

Black River Fall TTQ - Coaches Needed!

Total Trek Quest (TTQ) is an afterschool program for boys in grades 3-5 and combines the physical activity of training for a 5K with a curriculum that focuses on learning to make goals, building social bonds and making healthy choices.  TTQ is a 9 week program where volunteer coaches meet with the boys after school twice a week for 90 minute practices.  The program is FUN and uses running and educational activities to encourage positive mental health and wellness while also preventing high-risk behaviors.  Practices will begin the week of September 10th and will be on Mondays and Wednesdays immediately after school until 4:40pm.  A final 5K run will be November 10th!

Elementary Morning Carline Volunteers Needed

BR Elementary is still looking for smiling faces to volunteer in our morning carline: Open car doors for our students from 7:45am-8am.  Volunteering one day a week is great! Contact Dave Eklov if you can help -  dave.eklov@gmail.com

Back to School Information Packet - 2018-2019 School Year

Welcome to a new school year! We hope you are enjoying another beautiful Michigan summer.  As you make plans for the upcoming school year, please read through the 2018-2019 School Year - Back to School Information Packet. It is full of important dates, information, and links. We thank you for choosing to join the Black River family and look forward to seeing your student in the fall.

School Security System Update

We are excited to activate the new security system for the Main Building! With the new system, visitors will need to push the call button to the right of the Main Entrance Doors and wait to be greeted then let in remotely by office staff.  The same is true for the Handicap Accessible entrance, Door E in the back of the Main Building with a call button to the left of the doors. This is much like the system that has been in place at the Elementary Building since the spring and there are no changes to that system at this time. We appreciate your patience as we get used to our new procedures. The safety of our students and staff at Black River each day is a top priority.
