Outdoor Upgrades!

Dear BR Community,

Outdoor Campus Renovations Are Happening!

This summer, with the help of some grant funds, our campus will be upgraded!  Beginning shortly after school is out, we will begin a project to upgrade our campus in a number of ways that will make it more usable for outdoor learning and also accessible for all.

The biggest change you will notice is a removal of the drive that we call the “Gulch” between our Main Building and our Lyceum Building. The removal of the existing concrete and asphalt from the North end of that drive all the way to the back parking lot has been approved by the Fire Marshal to allow for us to replace that with a concrete walking path surrounded by vegetation. It will give our property much more of a “campus feel” as well as provide some spaces including a “seat wall” near the Science Building that will have many uses for outdoor learning. This new path will also connect to a new concrete slab, providing a better space for activities and connecting to our sidewalk and crosswalk to our Main Building parking lot. This will create a mid-campus “hub” that appropriately connects all of our buildings in the best way possible.

Another part of the plan is to add handicap accessible parking on the North End of this new walking path which will lead to a new accessible entrance closest to our elevator. This will take place at Door D, and include an indoor ramp for those who need that accommodation.

Bus Drivers Needed for Sporting Events and Field Trips

Summer is the perfect time to take a bus driver training course with BRPS! Would you consider becoming a bus driver to help with our field trips or serve our student athletes?  Black River Public School will partner with you and prepare you for this important role. Maybe you, your parent or someone you know is recently retired or has a job with flexible afternoons and evenings.  Anyone interested in getting started with driving certification should contact Kelli Heneghan (heneghank@brpsk12.org) for more information.

Community Service Update-Mar 22, 2022

Dear Black River Parents and Students,

During the last two years, many community service opportunities have either been canceled or compromised due to the international pandemic we are experiencing. As students were able to, we applaud the help they have been able to offer their communities and families during this time.

However, in fairness to students not having many traditional options available, we are going to "grant" one year's worth of community service to current students in the grades listed below.  The hours will vary depending on grade level.  The following chart may serve as an example, and it will take a little while to be updated in Infinite Campus, but it is in the works!

Grades 1-2                  4 hours granted (out of 10)

Grade 4                  8 hours granted (out of 15)

Grades 6-7                  7 hours granted (out of 20)

Grades 9-11               15 hours granted (out of 60)

Additionally, if a student does not meet the community service total requirement in grades 3, 5, 8 or 12, it will not prohibit them from advancing a grade level or graduating.
