Black River Sailing Team – 2017 Fall Season

Mission:  Development of leadership, sportsmanship, and sailing skills and to compete in the Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association.

When:  The fall high school sailing season runs for 9 weeks from September 5th thru November 2rd.  Practices are from 3:30 – 6:30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Proposed regatta schedule is listed on page two. 

What and Where:  The Black River Sailing Team is run as a partnership between Black River and Macatawa Bay Junior Association.  MBJA will provide the facility, 420 boats, and coaching for practices and regattas. 

Laser competitors will need to provide their own boat, borrow from a friend, or lease a Laser from MBJA if available.  

Estimated cost for the season per sailor: 

-MBJA Fall Sailing.  This cost includes use of MBJA boats and the facility.  $425

-MISSA (Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association) Registration.  $25

-Regatta registration fees (typically $25-$50 per regatta).  Total season estimate. $200

-Regatta coaching expenses. (Pro-rated per person)  Total season estimate. $200

-Additional individual travel fees. Total season estimate.  $200

-Personal Equipment (MBJA has donated equipment available for use)

Note:  These are only estimates, but very close to actual expenses for the 2016 fall season.  Financial Aid scholarships are available for MBJA fall sailing fees.  Contact Director at MBJ for more information.

Parent Participation:  We will need parents to volunteer early and often to drive the team to and from Regattas, serve as a Regatta Organizer, and more. 

Organization of BR Sailing Team:  As the Black River Sailing Team Parent Liaison I will work with the sailors / parents and with MBJA to organize the logistics for each regatta.

September 16-17:  Red Hat Regatta @ Pontiac Yacht Club (Tier 2 Qualifier)

420’s - Top 5 teams Qualify for MISSA Great Lakes Championship.

 

September 23-24:  MISSA Cressy Qualifier @ Wilmette, IL (Tier 1 Qualifier)

Laser - Top 3 Laser Full and Top 3 Laser Radial Qualify for National Championship.

 

October 7:  Keelboat (Sonars) Qualifier @ Chicago YC Belmont (Tier 2 Qualifier)

Sonars - 1st Place Team Qualify for National Keelboat Invite.

 

October 21-22     Michigan State Championships (Tier 2) Traverse City

420 Championship on the 21st.  Laser Championship on the 22nd.

 

October 28-29:  Halloween Last Chance @ TBD (Tier 2 Qualifier)

420’s - Top 5 teams Qualify for MISSA Great Lakes Championship.

Attendance is optional based on performance at Red Hat Regatta.

 

November 4-5:  MISSA Great Lakes Championship @ Chicago YC Monroe

(Tier 1 Midwest District Championship)  Must qualify at Red Hat or Last Chance.

October 27-29:  MISSA Cressy Nationals @ St. Petersburg YC

(Tier 1 National Championship)

 

November 18-19:  National Keelboat Invite @ St. Petersburg YC – Florida
