Hi, I'm Becky Bierma, and I am the 11-12th grade special education teacher and transition coach at Black River. I've been at BR since 2013 and in education on and off since 1997. I grew up in northwest Illinois, went to Trinity Christian College where I earned my BA in elementary education with concentrations in English, social studies, and music, and then I lived in the Chicago area for 13 years. My family moved to Michigan in 2010, and I earned my Master's Degree in special education specializing in learning disabilities from Michigan State University in 2018.
I teach support classes for English and organization, and I also co-teach sections of English 11 and 12 with our amazing English teachers. In addition to teaching at Black River, I also am assistant director for the Black River Theatre Company helping out Rachel Andrews, our fearless leader! I have a background in music, theatre, and dance, and my minor in college was vocal music performance.
My children, Sammie and Noah, and I live in Holland and love everything that the lakeshore area has to offer! We also have a dog, Autumn, and a cat, Cornelius, who bring us hours of entertainment. In my free time, I like to go hiking, go to the beach, enjoy local festivals, try new restaurants, and just spend time with family and friends.
