My name is Kristin VanHemert and I teach upper elementary grades here at Black River.  I grew up in Zeeland, and graduated in 2013 from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Social Studies. 

My teaching philosophy involves motivating students to become independent learners while still helping them to feel safe within our classroom environment. I strive to help my students work hard, treat others kindly, be considerate, and think ahead. 

In my free time, I like to read, play board games with my husband and friends, and play with my cats, Aria and Cricket. I spend time with my 3 older siblings and my niece and nephew. I also like to take walks, ride my bike, play the piano, and travel.
