Black River Elementary School is a Montessori learning environment. Our teachers and staff members strive to nurture the growth of the whole child by sparking curiosity and providing rich learning experiences.
Dr. Maria Montessori was the first female physician in Italy, graduating medical school from the University of Rome in 1896. Dr. Montessori developed her method of education based on her scientific observations of children. These observations and her interest in education led her to develop a unique approach to education that emphasizes independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural psychological, physical, and social development. Over one hundred years later, the Montessori approach continues to be respected and practiced internationally and is repeatedly validated by modern educational research.
Education is a natural process carried out by the child and is not acquired by listening to words but by experiences in the environment.
At Black River, teachers focus on preparing a welcoming and inclusive environment in which children are free to explore and learn at their own pace. Our curriculum focuses on hands-on learning, self-directed activity, and collaborative work. Teachers observe and facilitate learning, honoring each child’s unique learning style and pace, allowing students to develop autonomy and a love of learning. This approach fosters creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, preparing children to thrive in an ever-changing world.
