The Spanish department at Black River is proud to announce that we have eight students who earned the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy. This seal is an award that is given to students by the Michigan Department of Education in recognition of students who have attained proficiency in English and one or more languages by high school graduation. This year we also have a junior who has earned the award. The Michigan Seal of Biliteracy is designed to:
- Provide potential future employers with a method of identifying people with language and biliteracy skills
- Provide colleges and universities with a method to recognize and give credit to applicants for attainment of high level skills in multiple languages
- Prepare students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society
They were given the news of their award at a surprise cake reception during CAP attended by all the Spanish teachers and were publicly honored at the Black River Awards Assembly on April 25. The seal will be affixed to their diplomas.
The students are Rhea Rajani, Dustin Danckaert, Tess Freimark, Madeline Dykhouse, Emily Dykhouse, Samantha Lopez, Maritza Mecino-De-La-Rosa and junior Will Anderson.
