I received my undergraduate degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology from Hope College.
During my time at Hope, I was introduced to Black River through a year long internship. I fell in love with
the school instantly! After finishing my Master's degree in social work at Western Michigan University, I
first began working at BR.
My husband and I have two kids and a rescue dog (he's always up to something mischievous.) I love
working in my vegetable garden, plotting my next home project, going to the beach and staying up way
too late reading.

Annie Damstra - MS/HS Social Worker

My name is Annie Veld (Damstra). I grew up in Holland, MI and went to Hope College for my undergraduate degree. While attending Hope, I also played on the Women's Soccer Team - go Dutchmen! I went to Grand Valley State University for my Master's degree in Social Work. I currently live in Grand Rapids with my husband. In my free time I love to go on walks and listen to audiobooks, read, and be outside when the sun is shining and it is warm outside. :) I have a new found love of plants so my house currently looks like a greenhouse - fingers crossed it will continue to stay that way! I love the BR community and look forward to seeing the students' faces every day.

I grew up in the Grand Rapids area, and attended and graduated from the Wyoming Public Schools. I began my college journey at GRCC. My experiences there helped solidify my plans for becoming a school counselor. After completing GRCC I moved to North Carolina and attended Montreat College and Western Carolina University earning a Master’s Degree in School Counseling. I have lived and worked in North Carolina, California and here in West Michigan. I am coming to Black River Public School with 16 years of educational experience.

In my free time I love all things crafty. I also enjoy collecting rocks, seeking lighthouses and waterfalls. I also dabble in photography and recently am trying to learn how to sew.

I am excited to be part of the Black River Family.
